Looking Beyond the Horizon: Why Far East Sourcing Isn't the Only Game in Town
The advantages of closer-to-home sourcing

Alright, let's chat about something I've learned a lot about over the years: where we get our products from. For years, the Far East has been the go-to region for sourcing products, especially China, right? And, to be fair, it's made a lot of sense – generally competitive prices and a huge capacity to make pretty much anything. But speaking from experience as someone who's been deep in the world of global sourcing, it might be time we start looking a bit further afield, no, closer to home. The Far East simply doesn't have to be the only place we turn to.
My time at one retailer was a real eye-opener in this regard. We embarked on a project to bring our sourcing "closer to home". This wasn't just some abstract idea; it involved actually sitting down with emerging market embassies to find potential suppliers. And guess what? We saw key items and entire categories shift their primary sourcing to Türkiye, which meant some pretty significant savings on freight and duties. This whole approach even evolved into a model we later starting rolling out to other Eastern European countries. How cool is that?
So, what's the big takeaway here? It's that there's so much untapped potential much closer to us than we often realise. Think about places like Eastern Europe or Türkiye. When you source from there, you're looking at shorter lead times, lower shipping costs, and often, more flexibility in terms of manufacturing. Plus, it makes us much quicker on our feet when the market shifts or customer demands change.
And honestly, diversifying our sourcing isn't just about saving some cash. It's about making our supply chains way more robust, flexible & resilient. Relying too heavily on just one region can leave us pretty vulnerable to things like unexpected disruptions, or even shifts in global politics. By casting our net wider, we build a supply network that's much more adaptable and, frankly, less likely to give us sleepless nights.
In today's fast-moving world, being smart and innovative with our sourcing is absolutely crucial. So, while the Far East will always be a big player, I genuinely believe it's time to embrace a more diverse and global approach to where we get our products. There are amazing suppliers all over the world, and it's time we started discovering them!
